This season will probably be remembered (like the Waratahs) for a semi lost to 1 or 2 stupid decisions. Our exit in the semi came from upsetting 2nd place 2 games earlier and almost beating 1st a game later. In what must be described as a frustrating season, I must commend the boys for keeping their heads up and going into each new game with the same thirst for victory. Batsman not being given out and fielders claiming catches after falling over boundary markers cost us games, along with 2 players leaving us before Christmas. What I can say that came out of this season was the talent that's been hiding away in some players. With a few stand out players leaving us last season the room was there for others to step up and be noticed, and they didn't disappoint. Players who'd sat second or third on the batting were making runs week in week out, and bowlers who'd normally bowl 20 overs a season found the ball in their hand on a weekly basis. Although they may tell you they can all do better they showed glimpses of what they are capable of, which poses great things for next season. Although we didn't walk away with any silverware this year and at times you wondered what we'd done to annoy the cricket gods that much, this season was still as enjoyable as ever and provided some great cricketing memories.
Jason (Jay) Currey: Probably a season Jas would rather forget with the bat. Took a while to get started against some bowling attacks that were up on last year's standards. It probably didn't help that he had 3 different opening partners throughout the season. His work behind the stumps however was excellent and it showed with his 18 catches. Only took the ball on one or 2 occasions but still managed to pick up 2 wickets against the minor premiers in the final round. Look for Jay to be back in the runs next year and retailing locals with stories of his innings at the sporto on a balmy Saturday night.
John (Billy) Jerome: Back with us full time after filling in for a game or 2 last season, Billy has already impressed the team with his ability. Still only a young'n and not yet at drinking age meant that Billy was always up the order if we were batting first. Has a great head on his shoulders and never backs down. Was one of the more consistent batsmen in the squad and a nifty off-spinner who could pick up a few wickets when given the ball. Great first season from the young'n, expect great things from this man next year.
Mark (Griggsy) Griggs: Stood up this year in the absence of the Joyce boys and it showed. Unlucky not to have a few more 50's to his name but cleared 300 runs for the season to show his consistency. Had the ball back in his hand after a few year absence and showed he could still move the ball around and frustrate batsman. Great season from the fiery lad showing us is all round ability. Deserved winner of the batting award after 5 years of 2nd.
Brad (Murph) Murphy: New player to the team this season, who spent the first few rounds finding new and amazing ways to be the batsman in the Classic Catches highlights real. Murph is a great runner between the wickets ad can squeeze cheeky singles out of nothing. Hit the only ton of the season against the minor premiers in the final round. Also handy with the ball and can tie up an end in a one dayer forcing the opposition into errors. Great player to have in the squad.
Adam (Ads) Shearman: Started the season off with a flurry of runs before missing a few games for the birth of his first child (Which he was fined for…. Nice one Ads). Another player who once they get a start, can consistently put runs on the board. Also showed us (again) he was a handy bowler. Ads only bowled 3 times but came back with figures of 2/5 (2), 0/6 (8) and 2/7 (7). He was lethal with the ball in short spells.
Graham (Bargy) Baker: Bargy came into the team at the start of the season as a fill in for players playing soccer and AFL finals. By the end of round 3 he had 120 runs to his name from only 2 innings and became a full timer. Bargy has a great cricketing head and is always in your ear when things seem to be on the slide. A solid player who makes bowlers work for his wicket. Great season.
Chris (Chippa) Hush: Up and down season for Chris but he was one of only 4 players to have a 50 to his name. Was a bit more worried about when he was going to get a bowl than putting runs on the board. Hushy's fielding however was a big improver on last season. He also has the ability to play his best cricket when the team is in strife. His partnership got us within 6 runs of winning the semi and had it not been for a relief umpire (3 different umpires in a semi ???) he would have got us over the line.
Mike (Homsy) Homsy: Never have I seen a player turn up to a game of cricket looking so ordinary from the night before's shenanigans go on the play as well as mike does. He will also take credit for the 2 catches of the year which were almost mirror images of each other taken in 2 consecutive weeks. We lost him for part of the season as he moved to Tassie but he came back to see out the season with us. Great all-rounder that you can put anywhere on the field and see results.
Jono (JB) Bocking: JB was thrust up the bowling ranks this year. From bowling 20 odd overs a year he became our regular first change bowler and didn't disappoint. His fielding as always was top notch and he probably deserved a few more catches than his stats sheet shows. He must take credit for our outright win against Kings Langley, getting us home in the dark with about 4 minutes to spare, hitting 23no in about 3 overs. Another great season
Dave (Masso) Massingham: Masso was meant to be a write-off this season while he partied it hard over in the UK. However lack of money saw him donning the baggy maroon just before Christmas. Although Masso's season was limited he did something he has never done in a season before…. He didn't get 1 duck. Masso's solid batting and ability to grab runs that aren't there was a big plus this season for us. Look to see the Masso of old return next season when he's back on board full time.
Sacha (Sach) Hilbrink: Hilbrink had a frustrating year that saw injuries and weddings cause him to miss patches of the season. Took his chances when they came with the bat and as always was lethal with the ball. If he can get consistence game time next season he will take a mountain of wickets. Great team player who's always in your ear and never letting the opposition get the better of you.
Pat (Paddy) Mamo: The cap said last season he wanted to improve his batting, and he feels that has been accomplished this season with the top score in 2 games. His bowling stayed pretty much the same, as did his fielding. Became a bit wiser in the ways of captaining a team this year and found satisfaction in listening the players back themselves and giving them the chance to follow through. A Happy season all round.
Special thanks must go to James (Jimmy) Thornthwaite and David (Smitty) Smith who left us mid way through the season for various reasons. Also thanks must go to D.Rao, D.Wallwark, A.Jolly, G.Korny, M.Currey, I.Renton, H.Byrne and Mick (Tony) Ristuccia for filling in with us throughout the season. You all made contributions that got us to where we are. SPECIAL NOTE: For those of you following the B5 fines system that has been up and running for 2 years now, this years tally cleared 4 figures and paid for a weekend's shenanigans in Newcastle. I give the thumbs up for all teams to give it a go and shout yourself to an end of season night out. Anyone wanting to enquire about rules or fine ideas, or to obtain a copy of the Fines weekend report (Yes there is a report, complete with a Stats sheet and all), you know where to find us.
