2005/2006 Report - B7 Grade

After crashing out of the Semi Finals the previous season with a four run loss, we were hoping to go a couple of steps further in 2005/06. The nucleus of the side remained the same and we welcomed Charles Hoddinett and a returning James Thomson into the side. We also thank the players who "filled-in" for the team to cover absences. Another very poor episode was the fact that some "players" not only were a no show, but didn't let anyone know beforehand so other contingencies could be explored.

We played very hot and cold during the season and at times it seemed that some players lacked commitment, belief in themselves or a combination of these factors. Too often it was a situation where "someone else' would either score the runs or take that elusive wicket or accept the hard catch. On no less than two occasions our middle and tail end batting collapsed with us losing five wickets for less than ten runs. I thought that stuff only happened in under tens?

Now onto the more positive things. Ben Dooley had another outstanding year with the bat, ball and in the field. He is a rare cricketer who could progress a lot further if he wanted to and took the initiative. Getting his car licence would be a start to this independence! I was also most impressed and appreciative of the attitude and commitment shown by the bowling efforts of the ever-improving Will Cartwright, the all-round skills and application of Matt Hardy and the constant work and support on-and-off the field by Sam Freeman and Greg McLoughlin.

Team Members

David Banks - A below average season, having great difficulty in winning the toss for starters. Lacked consistency throughout the summer even though there are still more runs in the "tonkmaster". Bowled some tight spells throughout the season, but got carted during others. Couldn't catch a cold last summer.

Pat Barclay - Only played a couple of games. Pat is always enthusiastic and eager for a bowl, when he invariably takes a wicket when not much is happening.

Joel Bridgwood - Another outstanding year as wicketkeeper, rarely missing a catch or letting byes through. Joel's batting was a bit up and down this season yet he has the technique and application to improve on this next season.

Will Cartwright - Will has been developing into a better and quicker fast bowler every season. He has that Glenn McGrath look about him, including the killer instinct. Will bowled some great spells throughout the season. Personally, I felt the opening combination of Will and Ben was the best in the competition.

Ben Dooley - Played most of the season in the President's pants! Work that one out. A really gifted cricketer, and let's be honest here, the one person who has carried the team over the past few seasons. His bowling is fast and on the money most of the time. Top scored with 163 (with an elusive 200 on offer) in the finest century I have personally witnessed in 30 years of playing cricket.

Sam Freeman - A most reliable cricketer and team man. As Vice-Captain of the team, he led the boys to a number of victories earlier in the season. Has the natural ability to be a very fine batsman, but seems to get himself dismissed just when he looks like ripping into the opponents bowling. His leg spin picked up a few wickets as he can really give the ball a rip. Sam's fielding was also first class and he narrowly missed out on the Fielding Award.

Matthew Hardy - Enjoyed bowling especially in humid overcast conditions where he really got the ball to bend. Had some fine knocks with the bat as well, including some lusty hitting at times that saw the ball disappear over the boundary.

Charles Hoddinett - Probably batted a bit too high in the order, but was always putting his hand up to do the job and had a great attitude. Had a couple of good innings earlier in the year. His fielding improved markedly as the season progressed, taking a couple of fine catches.

Greg McLoughlin - Greg had a consistent year with the bat opening the innings, top scoring with 72. Unfortunately his back problems restricted his bowling this season, yet did pull off a five for at Ted Horwood mid-season. Greg's fielding and catching has improved dramatically over the past two or three years and he took some absolute screamers in the field, deserving the Fielding Award. Greg also did a lot on the field and behind the scenes to assist both the team and the Captain, which was most appreciated.

Dan Milne - Dan was there for most matches and almost took more catches than total runs scored for the season. Took a couple of really sharp catches during the summer.

Keith Morrison - Keith played in most games this year. He was enthusiastic in the filed and chased down anything that came his way. At times bowled very well with a highlight being his 5/ 39 against Granville Pats.

James Thomson - What a laid back character James is, nothing seems to faze him! Always looks like takings wickets or scoring runs, and sometimes it happens. I feel he has a lot of potential to unleash. Maybe next season.

Andrew Wilkins - I think Wilko still is troubled by his knee that he injured the previous season. Probably running from the head-hunters in New Guinea didn't help. Andrew took some hot catches in the slips this year and no doubt would have hoped for more runs as well.

In closing I wish to single four people out for sincere thanks.

1. Peter McLoughlin - Peter did heaps of "behind the scenes" things for the team throughout the season and in many ways helped it to function. The Club is indeed fortunate to have someone of Peter's enthusiasm, commitment and integrity as President. I have enormous respect and admiration for Peter and I thank him for the assistance he has given me both on and off the cricket field.

2. Greg McLoughlin - Thank you Greg for looking after the kit during the year (and invariably packed the damn thing up after each week). Also for liaising with the guys to find out who actually is available and arranging (with your Dad) replacements through Jason. Greg also captained one of the games and has a 100% winning record!

3. Sam Freeman - Sam captained a number of games in the skipper's absence. Thanks Sam for your support and to your younger brother Josh who came, played and/or fielded for us (often in very hot conditions) again at short notice.

4. Jason Currey - Thanks Jason for helping us out during the year often at the 11th hour! You have what is generally a thankless job, but we all appreciate your efforts.
