The first year in the Under 10s is always an interesting experience for all concerned! A few have been there before, others are coming up from "Have-A-Go" while many haven't done either - they're in the sport for the very first time. The U10 Blues had a combination of all three & what a great team we were!! Our "senior" members Tom Waddups and Troy Black were in their last season of Under 10s and formed the back-bone of the team with their confidence and experience. They certainly will be missed next season, but will enjoy the challenge of a tougher competition. Daniel Waddups, Luke Jerome, Angus McCorkell, Ramal Rajapakse and Jason Luther had come up from a season or two of "Have-A-Go" cricket and were ready for the "demands" of the Under 10s. Alexander Gould, Saad Monir, Yuvin Liyanage, Binara Wijesundara and Jake Krnel joined the team with no previous experience of cricket (other than in the backyard!) but with plenty of enthusiasm and determination. Nigel Gould offered to be our coach which turned out to be a tough assignment as he often had to juggle it with his shift work. We took a couple of rounds to settle in and for the boys to get to know one another, but it wasn't long before they knew each other's name and became "team mates". It certainly wasn't difficult getting everyone to come along to training! On this note, I extend my thanks to Daniel Chatman and Nick Bertus from the U14/1s for giving up their time on many a Thursday evening to help us out. They took charge without any fuss or fanfare and did any excellent job passing on batting, bowling and wicket-keeping advice. We won more games than we lost and it was truly encouraging to see the continued improvement in the boys and the enthusiasm with which they played. The losses hardly bothered them. I extend my thanks to the parents who came to the games and stayed to cheer on the team; to David Black for many weeks of umpiring and to Phil Waddups and Brent McCorkell for doing the needful when neither Nigel or David were around. In fact, Brent (who supposedly had no previous experience at umpiring) was looking quite the expert by the end of the season!!! I also appreciated the assistance provided by Joanne Waddups and Lisa Krnel to get the boys organised in their batting order. Thanks also to Nalaka for assisting with the scoring. It was a great experience and I would encourage all the boys to stay in the U10s for as long as their age permits them to gain valuable skills before moving into the more serious form of competition.
