2006/2007 Report - Under 12/2

A very good season was had this year by the under 12/2's. We won 8 of our 11 competition matches and came very, very close to winning the grand final. I am very proud of every single boy in this team. All of the boys contributed and have improved and progressed greatly on last year. Once again your attitude and commitment to playing the game in the right spirit was appreciated by myself and everyone involved with the team.

I am amazed when I look at last years statistics and there were 2 boys who scored over 100 runs for the season. This year there were 6 boys who scored more than 100 and 3 of those scored over 200. A huge improvement from last season. Our bowling was also hugely improved from last year when we had only 2 boys take more than 10 wickets. This season we had 5 with more than 10 and 2 of those with 25 or more. We also held 20 more catches. With improvement like this, it's no wonder we had a good year.

We had some very good performances this year. Our recovery from a heavy loss in Rd 3 against AKA to beat Kellyville the following game outright showed the boys what they could achieve. Josh B's 83 was great to watch as was his 100 run partnership with Trent, who made 41. Josh S's and James S's 104 run partnership against Greystanes, dragging us back up from 7/40 to 155 all out. Then Amars's 6/5, also against Greystanes, when they were travelling quite well, enabled us to take 8/24 to wrap up a game that showed we had character as well. There was Tom's 50 against Pendle Hill, James B's 49, James S' 5/8 and Amar's 4/2 against Kellyville. Shannan and Nick putting on 34 against Greystanes and Josh S's composed 3/6 off 7 overs to get us out of jail again. These are some of the obvious highlights of the season which show that we are a team in which everyone contributed.

This was on show again in the Grand Final. We came up against AKA, who were undefeated and the benchmark. We had closed the gap considerably from the first game when they comfortably beat us outright, to losing in the 2nd round clash despite scoring more runs off the bat than them. This had me feeling like anything could happen in the final if we played well enough. AKA won the toss and batted on an outfield that could only be described as very slow. It's disappointing when the biggest game of the year comes around and the teams have to hit the ball in the air to score runs. We bowled well and restricted them to 79 all out. Josh S and Amar starred with 3 wickets each. We fielded well dropping only 1 catch, Trent got a very sharp direct run out and Amar took the catch of the season, a 1 handed caught and bowled.

79 was never going to be easy on this ground. We fell to 7/45 with all leading run scorers gone. Then Josh S and Shannon batted for an hour getting us back in the game with 21 very important runs. Shannon's commitment and effort to fight his natural urges highlighted the character in this team. Then Nick came out and hit a beautiful square cut for 4 and we were only 8 runs away. Unfortunately there was no fairytale ending. But by fighting as hard as we did we got very close to a side that no one else had. The boys' performance in the final and there reaction after the game was very pleasing and something that I, as coach, was extremely proud of.

I can't wait for next season and I hope that getting as close as we did means that the boys will also be fired up for a big season. One thing that I hope the boys take out of this season is that the little things I harp on about at training do matter. We lost to AKA 3 times this season. In 2 of those games we either equalled their runs off the bat or beat them. This means we got beaten by extras in 2 games.

This season has been the most fulfilling in my 3 years as coach. To see the boys' improvement from last season was very rewarding. We had 8 boys from the previous season and 4 new, who all fitted in very well and helped make the team stronger. As the stats show every boy played an important part in the success we had this season.

I really enjoyed being involved in the finals this season and am sure the boys did too. It gives us a strong platform to build on next season.

I would like to thank the boys for their efforts and Geoff Stevenson, who once again did a fantastic job as manager. To Kev, Neil and Eric, thanks for looking after the scoring, and to Howard, a huge thank you for umpiring when we were batting. To all the parents, thanks for being there and supporting the team.

THE TEAM

Joshua Balzarolo - Josh had his best season to date. He opened the batting for most of the season and topped the batting aggregate with 223, took 18 wickets and 7 catches to play a big role in the team. A great all-round season.

James Benton - James opened a lot with Josh. Together they regularly got us off to a good start. So close to his first 50 when he got 49 against Kellyville. James's batting improved significantly this season. Did a good job as vice captain in the finals.

Thomas Hughes - Tom was our keeper and did very good job. His keeping is improving every year. He had a good season with the bat scoring 210 runs, including 50 against Pendle Hill. Tom really worked on his batting this year. He is starting to think like a batsman and realizing that defence is a big part of batting. I feel that when he gets the balance between attack and defence right, some big scores will come his way.

Greg Malyon - Greg was a welcome new addition to the team. He's a good kid and fitted in well. He didn't probably have as good a season as he would have liked as he sets very high standards for himself. Scored 127 runs at 15.8 and took 7 wickets at 21. He contributed to this team more than he realizes.

Todd Ripps - Todd was also new to the team and also fitted right in. Todd started the year bowling medium pace. Through the season he switched to spin and showed some potential. Took 9 wickets.

Trent Samuels - Trent had a very frustrating season. Trent averaged just 1.5 runs per over when bowling but just couldn't get the wickets he deserved. Still ended up with 11 wickets, at 12 and was an integral part of the bowling attack. Got his highest score of 41 against Kellyville.

James Senior - James had very good season, scoring 203 runs and taking 17 wickets. Didn't get his first 50 that he so desperately wants but scored some important runs for us, especially his 41no against Greystanes when he and Josh S rescued us from 7/40. Worked hard on his batting but has to learn to relax and put the bad ball away. Bowled off spin this season with great success. James captained us through the finals and did a very good job.

Sanju Sonnandara - Sanju had a bit of a disjointed season with quite a bit of time spent overseas. All parts of his game improved from last season, especially his fielding with him taking a couple of good catches at point. Unearthed a good arm towards the end of the season as well.

Joshua Stevenson - Josh had a great season, being leading wicket taker with 29 at 5.6, scoring 120 runs and taking 11 catches. He had a few problems with his action at times but fixed it towards the end of season and gained a bit more pace. Could always be relied on to take a wicket or slow the runs down. Almost got us home in the grand final with some gutsy batting.

Amar Subramanian - Amar topped the bowling averages with 25 wickets at 3.7, conceding only 93 runs from 69 overs. Against Greystanes he had the amazing figures of 4 overs 6/5 and 5 overs 2/4 for the amazing match figures of 9-4-8-9. Bowled beautifully all year but was a bit unlucky with the bat.

Nicholas Sullivan - This was Nick's first season of cricket and he improved considerably through the year. His biggest improvement was with the bat and with Shannan combined for a useful partnership against Greystanes in which he hit his first boundary and got his top score of 13.

Shanan Surendra - Shanan is a great kid who has some natural ability. In the final he showed he can bat very well when he puts his mind to it. He combined with Josh S in the final with a gutsy 1 hr partnership to almost get us over the line. He is naturally aggressive when he bats, but like Tom, if he can get the balance between attack and defence right some good scores will come.
