2006/2007 Report - Under 14/1

This team had a great season, winning every game except for one and going on to win the competition. With a new look team made up of players from last season's 13/1 team, four players from last season's under 14/1 team, and Tom Ortiz who came to us from another club. Our first game was against Kings Langley, the winners of last season's final, and with the game reduced to a one day game we were very pleased to start with a win. Nick took up where he finished last season scoring 70 not out and another 94 from 77 balls in the second game. In round three Kellyville scored 322 runs and could not believe it when we chased down their score in the last over with Nick 127 not out and Daniel 66 the top scorers. In round four against AKA Ben found his form, scoring the first ever juniors double century for Baulkham Hills with 212 runs from just 157 balls. Tom scored his first fifty in round five, finishing with 85 runs and then in round seven he cleaned up the opposition taking 6 for 13 in just 5 overs. Round seven saw Daniel score his first century, finishing with 126 runs from just 84 balls. Round eight was our first loss in a one day game against Kellyville who chased down our score with 3 overs to spare. In round nine Ben took to the AKA bowlers once again, reaching his 50 from just 30 balls and with some encouragement from his team mates, and not many overs remaining, Ben clubbed the bowlers, mostly out of the ground, going from 50 to 100 in just 14 balls to finish 101 not out from 45 balls at stumps. In round 11 Gabriel scored 98 runs just two runs short of his first century.

We played Wenty Leagues in the semi final, putting on 237 runs with Nick the top batsman finishing 157 not out. We bowled Wenty out for 73 to go through to the final.

In the final against Kings Langley we won the toss and batted, putting on 192 runs with Nick (59), Ben (46) and Daniel (34) the top scorers. With Kings Langley 5/39 after 15 overs we were looking good. This success did not continue with Kings Langley building their score with good partnerships to be within 17 runs of a win when we took the last wicket. Excellent bowling from Tom with 3/14 helped secure the win.

Another highlight of the season was playing the inaugural Michael Clarke Twenty20 Knockout Tournament contested by 27 U/14 teams from across Sydney. Our team made the top eight playing in the finals Gala Day where we won the quarter-final but got knocked out in the semi-final. Gabriel Joseph was named Player of the Tournament after scoring 100 runs and taking three wickets and one catch in two finals matches.

It was a pleasure to be involved with a team of talented young cricketers who played with such skill and professionalism.

The Team

Ben Abbott has had a tremendous year with the bat, scoring the first ever double century in juniors for the BHCC (a remarkable 212 runs which was also his first fifty and first century). Ben went on to score three more hundreds (139, 101*, 123) during the season, finishing with the highest aggregate for all juniors - 783 runs at an average of 71.2 at an amazing strike rate of 129%. In round 9 against AKA Ben went from 50 to 100 in just 14 balls. Ben is a great fielder with good reflexes and a safe pair of hands, taking 13 catches to equal the most catches for the team. Ben focused on his batting and did not bowl as many overs this season taking 4 wickets. Ben's improvement from last season and his success this season saw him selected as the most improved junior for the club. His performance was recognized with his selection to play representative cricket for the PDCA in the winning Moore Shield Team.

Ornob Abedin has had a very good season, especially with his bowling, taking 13 wickets at 20.08 runs per wicket from 68 overs. Ornob took 3 for 10 in round 10 against Kellyville and then bowled brilliantly in the semi final taking 2 for 3. Ornob is a very handy batsman and the fact that he was not out 5 times meant that he could have scored a lot more runs given the chance. He finished with a very good average of 18. Ornob is a good fielder with good reflexes and safe hands. He took a brilliant catch in the final against Kings Langley to remove their best batsman which may have won us the game.

Michael Bennetts has had a very good season, especially with the ball where he bowled 50 overs taking 20 wickets at an average of 8.65 runs per wicket to finish 2nd in the bowling averages. Only one run separated the top two bowling spots; had Michael given away one less run he would have won the bowling award. Michael was unlucky with the bat this season and is a much better batsman than shown by the stats. Michael showed his skills in the Twenty20 competition where his batting was a major contribution to our team winning the quarter finals. Michael is an excellent fielder with good reflexes, safe hands taking 6 catches and is very fast across the field. His contribution, approach to the game, team spirit and bowling performance were recognized by his selection for the encouragement award.

Nicholas Bertus has had a tremendous year with the bat and as a keeper. Nick opened the season scoring 70 runs not out which set the standard for the rest of the season - he scored more than 50 in eight innings out of twelve. Nick scored a massive 752 runs at an average of 94 with a strike rate of 92%. Nick scored two hundreds 127* and 157* and finished first in the averages with the second highest aggregate for all juniors. As the keeper, Nick did a great job, taking 13 catches and 6 stumpings. Nick was selected to play representative cricket for the PDCA in the winning Harold Moore Shield Team where he scored 268 runs at 53.6 and kept for the team taking 13 catches. Nick's outstanding performance was recognized with his selection as the Under 14s player and keeper of the year by the NSW Districts Cricket Association. Nick was also selected to play in the A.W. Green Shield (Under 16's) where he scored 211 runs at an average of 70.3, with two 50s. His performance in representative cricket has again seen him selected in the Under 16 NSW Emerging Blues.

Daniel Chatman is an excellent all round cricketer and has continued to develop his knowledge and skills as a successful captain. Daniel had a great season with the bat scoring 416 runs at an average of 37.82 to finish 4th in the average and 3rd in the aggregates. He also had the 4th highest aggregate for all Juniors at BHCC. Daniel took on the role of opening batsman for the majority of the games showing great patience and concentration scoring his runs against some of the best bowling with a strike rate of 76%. He bowled 81 overs with 16 maidens taking 15 wickets at 11.93 runs per wicket to finish 3rd in the bowling. Daniel is an excellent fielder, has a strong and accurate throw and a very safe pair of hands taking 8 catches. Daniel was selected to play representative cricket for the PDCA in the winning Harold Moore Shield Team where he captained the team to win the shield for the third successive year.

Raveen De Silva is a talented cricketer and has had a good season. He reached a new top score of 32 runs in round 4 where he provided great support to Ben when he scored his double century. Raveen is a patient batsman who does not give his wicket away easily. He scored 77 runs and average 12.8 from 8 innings. Although Raveen only bowled three overs he took three wickets for only 9 runs from 3 overs. Raveen is a team player and puts in 100% every game, he encourages his team and plays within the spirit of the game.

Omal Fernando is a very good all round cricketer who enjoys every game. Omal is a talented batsman scoring 141 runs in 10 innings at an average of 17.6. Omal is also a very handy leg spin bowler who can also bowl the odd off spin ball to keep the batsmen on their toes. He bowled 18 overs taking 6 wickets at an average of 13.83 runs per wicket to finish 5th in the bowling averages. Omal has good reflexes and a safe pair of hands in the field taking 8 catches.

Matheesha Guneratne is a talented all round cricketer. Matheesha opened the batting on many occasions helping the team get off to a good start. Matheesha scored 152 runs at an average of 19 from 11 innings finishing 6th in the batting averages. Matheesha's top score was 45 in round 2 against Wenty Leagues. Matheesha took 5 catches and gave 100% every game in the field which has been recognised by his selection for the fielding award.

Harmon Josan has had a good season and always looks to enjoy every game. His team mates nick-named him "The Harmonator", due to his ability to remove some of the best batsmen with his left arm bowling. Harmon bowled 68 overs taking 10 wickets with his best effort in round 9 taking 3/4. Harmon is a good slips fielder. Harmon was a bit unlucky with the bat finishing with an average of 5 with a top score of 12 runs.

Gabriel Joseph is a very talented cricketer. Gabriel batted very well scoring 411 runs at an average of 41.10 from 12 innings He finished 3rd in the averages with the 4th highest aggregate in the team and the 5th highest aggregate for all juniors. His performance in representative cricket was recognized by his invitation to try out for the NSW Emerging Blues. Gabriel Joseph was also named Player of the Tournament in the Michael Clarke Twenty20 competition where he scored 100 runs and took three wickets and one catch in two finals matches.

Ajay Joshi has had a very good season, especially with the ball. Ajay bowled 86 overs with 14 maidens, taking 14 wickets at 20.64 runs per wicket. Ajay's best bowling was in round 11 where he took 3/4 and then backed up in the semi final taking 2/6. Ajay is a good fielder taking 2 catches this season. Ajay is an enthusiastic player who always encourages his team, he puts in 100% at training and in every game.

Tom Ortiz was new to our club this year and certainly made a big contribution to the team. Tom puts in 100% at training and in every game; he never seems to get rattled and has been on occasions called the "iceman". Tom is an excellent all-rounder, he bowled 106 overs taking 24 wickets at 8.63 runs per wicket which was the most wickets and best average for the team which saw him receive the bowling award. Tom bowled 25 maidens with his best performance in round 7 where he took 6/13 & 2/18 against Wenty Leagues. He also took 3/14 playing a major role in winning the final. Tom also did very well with the bat scoring 193 runs from 8 innings at an average of 32.2 to finish 5th in the batting averages. Tom scored his first fifty this season going on to reach 85 in round 5. Tom is an excellent fielder, with good reflexes taking 6 catches.
