2006/2007 Report - B2 Grade
Overall we had a successful year in B2 finishing 2nd at the end of the home and away season, but getting knocked out in the semi-final. B2 was a very tight competition with 5 of the 8 teams still having a chance of missing out on or making the semi-finals in the last round. There were very few easy wins and a couple of games where we had to fight hard to not be beaten outright. Often fielding and more particularly dropped catches, were the difference between a win and a loss.
Having beaten Winston Hills twice during the year, one being a narrow win in a one-day game and the other a convincing outright win, it was disappointing not to be able to come out on top in the semi final. After starting well with the ball early in the semi-final we let them get away to 212. We only managed 127 in reply, a disappointing end to the season. However, Winston Hills hit form at the right end of the season, and beat the three top teams in the last round, semi-final and final to be deserving premiers.
The stand out performers of the year were;
Bowling
Keenan Galas was our main strike bowler taking 38 wickets at an average of 13.24 runs. Keenan made most opening batsman look uncomfortable against his pace with the risk of injury always on the cards. 7/19 against Kellyville in round one an absolute highlight.
Peter Norris was a welcome addition to our side this year providing the option of a left arm swing bowler. Peter bowled with intelligence finishing the year with 20 wickets at 11.85. 6/19 against Cumberland in the last round produced a win against the odds.
Ben Atkins (24 wickets at 17.17) and Andrew Hinton (17 wickets at 16.47) also proved to be wicket takers with great strike rates and were probably under-bowled too often.
Batting
Adam Tinley scored 356 runs at an average of 22.25. The tin man has huge potential with the bat with great technique and superb timing. With a bit of luck with the umpires, of which he didn't have much this year, could easily score twice this many runs in a season.
Andrew Denlow has great temperament and technique. The better the opposition bowlers are, the better he seems to bat. He scored 288 runs at an average of just under 20. Unfortunately for Andrew our home ground often resembled the long grass plains of the Serengeti which makes it hard for someone who prefers to keep the ball on the ground.
Chris Marjoniemi also had a good year scoring 283 runs at an average of 20.2. Seemed to get a start in just about every innings but didn't capitalise when he had done the hard work.
Fielding
Not a great feature of our game throughout the year. For a team that hasn't done a fielding drill for 5 years we aren't too bad! Dave Higginbotham completed some miraculous stumpings and took a heap of catches and continued his transformation from opening bowler to wicketkeeper.
Ben Atkins stood out as the safest pair of hands in our team whether in slips or on the boundary.
Overall, it was yet another fun and enjoyable season of cricket. Thanks to everyone involved.
